3Dbf{3}textbf{D} Shapes

3Dbf{3}textbf{D} shapes are different from 2D2text{D} shapes because they have length, width and depth. You can imagine a 3D3text{D} shape made from a block of wood.

Your child will need to recognise properties of different 3D3text{D} shapes, understand how nets fold to make 3D3text{D} shapes, and know how to find the volume of cubes and cuboids.

Faces, Edges and Vertices

 

 

A face is a flat surface on a shape.

An edge is a straight line where faces meet.

A vertex is a corner of a shape, where edges meet. The plural of vertex is vertices.

 

Common 3Dbf{3}textbf{D} Shapes

Cubes and cuboids have 66 faces, 1212 edges and 88 vertices.

A square based pyramid has 55 faces, 88 edges and 55 vertices.

A triangular based pyramid has 44 faces, 66 edges and 44 vertices.

All prisms have the same face at each end.

A triangular prism has 55 faces, 99 edges and 66 vertices.

A pentagonal prism has 77 faces, 1515 edges and 1010 vertices.

Volume of Cubes and Cuboids

Volume is the space inside a 3D3text{D} shape.

The volume of a cube or cuboid is length ×times width ×times height

Volume is measured in units cubed, e.g. cm3text{cm}^3 or m3text{m}^3

 

Example: Work out the volume of the cuboid.

Length =6 cm=6text{ cm}

Width =4 cm=4text{ cm}

Height =2 cm=2text{ cm}

Volume ==lengthtext{length} ×times widthtext{width} ×times heighttext{height}

== 66 ×times 44 ×times 22

=48 cm3=48text{ cm}^3

Nets

3D3text{D} shapes can be made using a net. A net is a 2D2text{D} shape that folds up to become a 3D3text{D} shape.

Imagine cutting these shapes out of card and folding them up to make the 3D3text{D} shapes:

Draw a sketch of the 3D3text{D} shape made using this net:

 

 

 

 

Encourage your child to look at the shape and size of the faces on the net.

We can see the shape has three rectangular faces, and identical triangular faces at each end.

So from the common 3D3text{D} shapes we have seen, it must be a triangular prism.

3D Shapes Example Questions

Question 1: How many vertices does a triangular prism have?

[1 mark]

Vertices are corners, so a triangular prism has 66 vertices.

Question 2: What is the volume of a cube with side lengths of 3 cm3text{ cm}?

[1 mark]

On a cube, all edges are the same size, so the length, width and height are all 3 cm3text{ cm}.

So the volume is 3×3×3=27 cm33times3times3=27text{ cm}^3

Question 3: This tank is full of water. The volume of the water is 60 m360text{ m}^3.

What is the height of the tank?

[2 marks]

We know volume is length ×times width ×times height.

So 60=4×3×60=4times 3times height

Simplifying, 60=12 ×60=12 times height, so the height must be 5 m5text{ m}

Question 4: Which is the correct net for a cube?

[1 mark]

A cube has six square faces, so must be option CC.

Question 5: Here is a net of a cuboid. Which vertex will join to xx?

[1 mark]

The four rectangular faces will wrap around the four edges of the square face, so vertex BB will join to xx.
