The Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Format
Students are selected and offered places to the Royal Latin School, based on their performance in the STT. This is a GL 11 Plus, and is the chosen selective tests for all of TBGS alike. If your child attends a state-funded grammar school, they will automatically be entered into the STT for the appropriate year; registration for the STT is therefore only required where your child attended an independent school, or one outside Buckinghamshire. The content of the assessment tests beyond what is taught at primary education level; the test is designed to push candidates with the question difficulty and formatting. The unfamiliar format of the test and its difficulty can seem daunting. We understand and are accustomed to the content of the test; its methodology and method of marking. We can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed on admission to Royal Latin School.
The STT: Overview
There are four key components to the STT, which is overseen and marked by the GL Exam Board, making it a GL 11 Plus Exam. The STT will assess candidates competency in English, Verbal Reasoning (VR), Non-verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Maths. For an in depth breakdown of the GL 11 Plus in Buckinghamshire, please visit our article ‘Selective Tests in Buckinghamshire – The GL 11 Plus Test’.
Overview:
The test consists of two exam papers, each taking approximately 60 minutes in length.
- Paper One: Verbal Reasoning (VR) & English: VR and English each have their own section.
- Paper Two: Non-verbal Reasoning (NVR) & Mathematics: NVR will include Spatial Reasoning (SR) too, and will have its own section. Maths will have its own section.
TBGS GL 11 Plus Test: Pass Criteria
Test scores are received by October for the following year of entry. It is notable that younger children are not penalised for their age, the results are statistically standardised to compare any child’s score average to the average score of their school year. Further, there is no ‘pass mark’, for the STT; instead, admission is based on whether a candidate has met a ‘qualifying score’. This is the minimum aggregate score received upon sitting the STT that a child must receive in order to be eligible for admission to Royal Latin School. However, the ‘qualifying mark’ varies from year to year. Although the qualifying mark cannot be predicted, it is estimated that the top 25% of students will achieve the qualifying mark

English and Verbal Reasoning (each with their own section)
Paper 2:
Maths and Non-verbal Reasoning (each with their own section)

Catchment Area
As a prerequisite, for admission into Year 7, a child must achieve the “qualifying score” on the STT in order to be eligible for admission to the Royal Latin School. The qualifying score is currently an aggregate score of 121, but this is subject to change. The school does operate on a catchment area, which is used in the over-subscription criteria. A map of the school catchment area is contained on their website. It can be found at – https://www.royallatin.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/RoyalLatincatchmentMapJune2017-1.pdf – it is notable that the catchment area is subject to change every year, so please check for the most updated version of the catchment area.
Oversubscription Criteria:
Where qualifying applications for admission (i.e. those for a child with a standardised score of 121 or above or deemed qualified by a selection review) exceed the number of places available, the following criteria will beapplied in the order set out below to decide which student to admit:
- Looked After and Previously Looked After Children*;
- Children living in the catchment area of the school who must have been resident there continuously from October 31st of the preceding year of entry;
- Siblings of children who will be on the roll of the school at the time of the proposed admission;
- Qualified children of Royal Latin School staff where the member of staff has either:
- Been employed at the school for at least 2 years
- The member of staff was employed to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage.
- Children who have exceptional medical and social needs which can only be met at the school;
- Children who qualify for the Pupil Premium** – this must be on census day of the academic year that offers are made;
- Up to 6 places to children are then offered to children whose standardised score in the STT is 110 to 120 inclusive (so wouldn’t otherwise qualify for the school as they didn’t score 121, and who didn’t subsequently qualify through a selection review). Children fit into this category if:
- They are Looked After or Previously Looked After Children;
- They are living in the catchment area (continuously from October 31st of the preceding year of entry), who are eligible for the Pupil Premium grant at the application deadline
- (Looked After and Previously Looked After children are prioritised here)
- Siblings of children who have previously been on the roll of Royal Latin School;
- Once the above rules are applied, further places are offered in distance order, using straight line distance between the family’s normal home address and the school’s nearest entrance gate (closest first).
Additional eligibilities:
For children who qualify (score 121 or are admitted following a selection review) and who have EHCPs that name the school will be admitted prior to the application of admission rules/oversubscription criteria and under separate statutory procedures.
