If, like many other parents, your search history is a mess of curriculums, past papers, and school websites, then you’ve been looking for some guidance in navigating all things 11 Plus. It can feel overwhelming at first with all the different schools, consortia, registration processes, dates and exams, and so on. And it’s not like any two boroughs or counties will have the same information or follow the same rules! That’s why it’s so vital to have reliable information in one place. That’s what Pass 11 Plus is about.

Why it’s so difficult finding an 11 Plus curriculum.

One of the biggest surprises for parents is discovering that there is no single, official 11 Plus curriculum. Unlike SATs or GCSEs, where the exam board and syllabus are easy to identify, the 11 Plus varies by area, consortium and even by individual school. Each school chooses which subjects to include and how much weight to give them. Some focus mainly on Key Stage 2 maths and English, while others place greater emphasis on skills that don’t fit neatly into a curriculum, such as non-verbal reasoning or creative writing.

This leaves families with a few key routes to follow:

  1. Exam boards.
  2. Exam Papers or Past Papers.
  3. Familiarisation with the Key Stage 2 syllabus.
  4. Parental guidance and collaboration.

1. Exam Boards.

The first step is identifying the exam your child will sit. This depends on the grammar schools in your area and whether they belong to a consortium. If they do, the exam format is usually consistent across those schools. If not, you may need to prepare across a wider range of content. You can click below to find your school and see what consortium they belong to and what exam board they follow.

2. Exam Papers.

Once you know your school and consortium, you’ll be able to find the type of assessment they like to follow. For example: The GL assessment exam board is most widely used all across the country and tends to include exams on four 11 Plus subjects. being maths, English, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. Meanwhile, the CSSE exam board just assesses 10 of the 11 schools in Essex and has 2 parts, an English paper, and a Maths paper. It’s important to understand that although schools will use differing exam boards, questions will rarely ever stray beyond the scope of the Key Stage 2 syllabus, and so we don’t ever recommend parents push their children that far just for the 11 Plus. 3. Familiarisation with the Key Stage 2 syllabus.

The vast majority of grammar schools across the country will base their exams on the skills their children learn in primary school, so you really can’t go wrong by building up your child’s foundation in Maths and English, before moving on to the more challenging 11 Plus style questions. You really don’t want to waste any time racing off into secondary school content, as you’ll see when you open any past paper from any of the exam boards.

4. Parental Guidance and Collaboration

An important aspect of 11 Plus Preparation is understanding that you as a parent are not teaching your child, you are there to offer structure, encouragement, and consistency. You’ll find that your child makes the most progress when you work together, agree on a relaxed routine that balances school, 11 Plus Revision, and rest. With enough gentle support and regular check-ins, your child will stay motivated and really enjoy collaborating with you on this.

What’s the take home?

Preparing for the 11 Plus doesn’t have to feel scattered or confusing. Once you understand why there’s no fixed curriculum, and you know which exam board your chosen schools use, everything becomes far easier to navigate. Focus on solid Key Stage 2 skills, use reliable practice papers, and support your child with a steady, balanced routine. With the right guidance and a clear plan, you’ll give your child every chance to approach the 11 Plus with confidence.
