Ripon Grammar Exam Format

Entry to Year 7 at Ripon Grammar School is determined by performance in the GL Assessment 11 Plus exam. All applicants must sit the test, which takes place at the school or at an authorised local centre. The entrance exam is usually held in mid-September of Year 6 and includes three multiple-choice papers:

Catchment Area

Ripon Grammar School does operate a catchment area meaning priority is given to applicants who live within this area, when applications exceed places. The catchment area is defined by North Yorkshire County Council for Year 7 entry. Candidates living outside the catchment can still apply, but they are considered after those inside, under the oversubscription rules.

Additional Eligibility

When applications exceed the number of places, the following order of priority applies:

  1. Looked-after and previously looked-after children

  2. Pupils eligible for Pupil Premium

  3. Applicants living within the designated priority area, ranked by score

  4. Other candidates, ranked by score regardless of address

For boarding students, allocation is based on suitability for boarding (assessed through a supplementary form and interview), exam performance, and available boarding capacity. Click here to view the full Ripon Grammar Admissions Policy

Ripon Grammar School FAQs

You need to register for the Ripon Grammar entrance exam (usually by late June) via the school’s website. Also, submit the Common Application Form (CAF) through your local authority by 31 October, naming Ripon Grammar as a preference.

The exam (by GL Assessment) takes place around mid-September in Year 6. It has three multiple-choice papers: Verbal Reasoning; English (comprehension & literacy); and Mathematics (Key Stage 2 content). Each paper lasts about 50 minutes, with results age-standardised.

Entry is very competitive: only 117 places are available each year (including about 14 boarding). Because many applicants take the test, your child generally needs high scores across all papers to have a strong chance.
