Wolverhampton Girls’ High School Exam Format
Wolverhampton Girls’ High School is part of the West Midlands Grammar Schools Consortium, so applicants take the shared 11 Plus entrance exam used by all member schools.
The CEM 11 Plus Exam: Overview
The entrance test includes two multiple-choice papers, each lasting around 50 to 60 minutes. Answers are recorded on separate sheets, and scores are age-standardised for fairness. The papers assess English Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and Non-Verbal and Spatial Reasoning and results are weighted as follows: 50% English/Verbal Reasoning, 25% Non-Verbal Reasoning, and 25% Mathematics.
Paper One
A multiple-choice exam that assesses all four key areas – English comprehension, verbal reasoning, mathematics, and non-verbal or spatial reasoning.
Paper Two
A multiple-choice exam that assesses all four key areas – English comprehension, verbal reasoning, mathematics, and non-verbal or spatial reasoning.
West Midlands Consortium 11 Plus Assessment Criteria
| English | Maths | Verbal Reasoning | Non-Verbal Reasoning | Additional criteria |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Pass Mark
There is no official pass mark, but successful candidates generally perform very strongly across all areas.
Catchment Area
Although there is no defined catchment area, proximity to the school is taken into account when candidates achieve identical scores.
Additional Eligibility
Achieving the required standard in the entrance exam is essential for entry, but it’s not the only factor considered. When applications exceed available places, Wolverhampton Girls’ High School applies the following oversubscription criteria:
-
Looked-after or previously looked-after children who meet the qualifying score.
-
Up to 15% of Year 7 places allocated to applicants eligible for Pupil Premium.
-
Remaining places offered in rank order of exam performance, with distance from the school used as a tiebreaker if necessary.

Wolverhampton Girls’ High School FAQs
Applications for Year 7 entry must be made through your local authority’s online admissions system. You’ll also need to register your child for the West Midlands Grammar Schools 11 Plus test, which determines eligibility for a place.
The entrance test is provided by GL Assessment and includes two multiple-choice papers. These assess English comprehension, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, spatial reasoning and mathematics, with scores standardised for age.
Competition for places is very high, with far more applicants than available spaces. Admission is based on ranked performance in the 11 Plus exam, and achieving the qualifying score does not guarantee a place.
