The Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Format
Entry to Aylesbury Grammar School is determined by performance in the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT), used by The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS) as part of the Year 7 admissions process.
Pupils attending Buckinghamshire state-funded primary schools are normally registered for the test automatically, unless a parent chooses to withdraw. Registration is required for children attending independent schools or schools outside Buckinghamshire.
The STT is designed to assess a range of core skills beyond standard classroom learning, including verbal, numerical and non-verbal reasoning. The format may feel unfamiliar at first, so early preparation and regular practice can help pupils build confidence and become comfortable with the style of questions they will encounter.
The STT: Overview
The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) is administered by GL Assessment and is used by The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS) as part of the Year 7 admissions process.
Overview:
The test consists of two exam papers, each lasting approximately 60 minutes.
All questions are multiple-choice and answers are recorded on separate answer sheets. Scores are age-standardised and combined to produce a Secondary Transfer Test Score (STTS). The weighting is 50% verbal ability, 25% numerical ability and 25% non-verbal ability.
Secondary Transfer Test: Qualifying Score
Results are usually sent to parents in October for entry the following September. There is no fixed pass mark. Pupils must achieve a qualifying score to be considered for grammar school admission, and this score may vary slightly each year depending on overall performance.
Paper 1:
English comprehension and Verbal Reasoning.
Paper 2:
