The Slough Consortium 11+ Format
The selective test used for admission to Upton Court Grammar School, alike to all of the Grammar Schools under Slough council, is a 11+ exam governed by the CEM exam board. Registration for the test is made via the Slough Consortium application portal. The CEM 11+ exam is a multiple choice test and assesses a candidate’s competence in Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal reasoning; the Verbal Reasoning section of the assessment may contain reading comprehension similar to other 11+ English sections, but there is no dedicated English section. The content of the assessment tests beyond what is taught at primary education level; the test is designed to push candidates with the question difficulty and formatting. The unfamiliar format of the test and its difficulty can seem daunting. The 11 Plus Hero is here to help. We understand and are accustomed to the content of the Slough 11+ test and the CEM exam board, including their methodology and method of marking. We can provide a toolkit to your child, familiarising them with the test format and ensuring they have the best chance to succeed.
The Slough Consortium 11+: Overview
The Slough Consortium 11+ is a multiple choice paper with 3 key components to it; it is overseen by the CEM exam board. The Slough 11+ is a multiple choice test and will assess your child’s competency in Verbal Reasoning, Non-verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning. For an in depth breakdown of the Slough Consortium 11+, please visit our article – ‘Selective Tests in Slough – the CEM 11+ Test’.
Overview:
The test consists of two exam papers, each taking approximately 60 minutes in length. Each test may contain a mix of Verbal Reasoning, Non-verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning, it is at the Consortium’s discretion as to which are included.
- Paper One: (A choice of) Verbal Reasoning (VR) Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Numerical Reasoning (NR)
- Paper Two: (A choice of) Verbal Reasoning (VR) Non-verbal Reasoning (NVR) and Numerical Reasoning (NR)
Slough Grammar Schools CEM 11 Plus Test: Pass Criteria
Test scores are received in mid-October of the preceding year of entry; for example for entry in 2023, test scores will be received by mid-October 2022. It is notable that the Slough consortium uses a method of standardised marking, meaning that younger children are not penalised for their age, the results are statistically standardised to compare any child’s score average to the average score of their school year. The ‘pass mark’ for the Sough CEM 11+ is currently an aggregate score of 111; this is the score which would make a child eligible for admission for a grammar school in Slough. However, it is notable that this is subject to change. For this reason, the ‘pass mark’ cannot be predicted for every year, but it is estimated that the top 25% of students will achieve the qualifying mark. For more information please see our article ‘Selective Test in Slough – CEM 11 Plus”
Paper 1:
A mix of either Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning (it is at the Consortium’s discretion as to which will be tested on each paper)
Paper 2:
A mix of either Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning (it is at the Consortium’s discretion as to which are tested on each paper)

Catchment Area
As a prerequisite, to be eligible for admission to Upton Court Grammar School, children must achieve an aggregate score of 111 in the Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools 11+ Exam. Unlike some other grammar schools in Slough and the UK, Upton Court Grammar School does not operate on a ‘catchment area’, or any distance related mechanism which restricts who can attend the school, however, a certain number of places are reserved for eligible pupils who live closest to the school; a set of oversubscription criteria is used, listed below. The schools 2023 admission policy can be found uisng the following link – https://www.uptoncourtgrammar.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/UCGS-Admissions-Arrangements-2023-24.pdf .
Oversubscription Criteria:
Where the number of ‘eligible’ pupils reaching the required standard in the 11+ entrance examination exceeds the number of places available, the school uses the following set of oversubscription criteria to make offers to prospective students; places will be allocated in the following order of priority:
- A ‘Looked After or ‘Previously Looked After’ child;
- Up to 20 places are offered to applicants eligible for the Pupil Premium, or who have been eligible for such in the last 6 years;
- Where there are over 20 students eligible for this category, they will be prioritised by rank order of school and then by distance from the school
- Children of members of staff who:
- have been employed by Pioneer Educational Trust for 2 years or more prior to the final submission deadline for the CAF, on 0.5 of full time; OR
- They are filling a vacant post for which there is a skill shortage, and working at Upton Court Grammar School
- Children attending, at the time of application, Foxborough Primary School or Trevelyan Middle School, as the designated Feeder Schools;
- Up to 120 Pupils in rank order of performance in the 11+, if pupils are admitted through the above criteria then this number will reduce accordingly;
- The remaining offers, up to the PAN of 165, will be made by distance from the school.
Additional eligibilities:
Children with Education, Health and Care plans are admitted via statutory procedure. As contained in Upton Court’s 2023 admissions policy, the school will work with any recognised authorities to ensure that a child with EHC plan are admitted if they are to be suitable to have a successful education for their school.
*A Looked After or Previously Looked After child is one who has been in, or previously been in, state authority care.
**Pupil Premium – A child in receipt of the Pupil Premium is eligible for free school meals.
