Invicta Grammar School Exam Format
Entry into Year 7 at Maidstone Grammar School for Girls is through the Kent Test, which is administered by GL Assessment.
The GL 11 Plus Kent Test: Overview
Paper One
English and Maths: The first stage of the Kent Test is the English and maths paper, lasting one hour in total. It is divided into two 30-minute sections. Each section starts with a short five-minute practice, followed by 25 minutes of timed questions. The English section usually includes a reading comprehension alongside spelling, grammar and vocabulary questions. The maths section is based on Key Stage 2 topics, testing problem-solving and numerical skills.
Paper Two
Reasoning: The second paper also lasts for one hour and focuses on reasoning skills. The first 30 minutes assess verbal reasoning, beginning with a short practice section. The remaining time is dedicated to non-verbal reasoning, split into shorter, timed parts that measure spatial awareness, logic and pattern recognition.
Additional
Alongside the test papers, pupils complete a writing task lasting 40 minutes. This includes 10 minutes for planning and 30 minutes for writing. While not marked as part of the Kent Test score, the writing may be reviewed by a headteacher panel if results are borderline.

Pass Mark
The Kent Test, run by GL Assessment, does not use a set pass mark or percentage. Scores are standardised to rank pupils, with roughly the top 25% nationally deemed suitable for grammar school entry. As a result, the qualifying score varies each year depending on overall performance.
Catchment Area
Invicta Grammar School does not operate a standard catchment area as defined by either nearby postcodes or parishes, but accepts students from over 50 nearby primary schools. Girls who have passed the Kent Test will be admitted to Invicta Grammar School based on the proximity of their permanent residence and a fixed point at the school in a straight line, as defined by the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) address point data. As such the catchment area may be small one year if many students in close proximity achieve passing grades, but may grow larger the following year.
Additional Eligibility
To be considered for a Year 7 place at Invicta Grammar School, your child must achieve the required standard in the Kent Test and name the school on the Kent Secondary Common Application Form. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee entry, as places are offered according to the school’s oversubscription criteria when applications exceed available spaces.
Priority is given in the following order:
-
Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children
-
Children with a sibling already at the school
-
Applicants with health or special access needs
-
Children eligible for pupil premium funding
-
Children of staff members at the school
-
Applicants living closest to the school
Before these criteria are applied, any child with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that names the school will be offered a place.

Invicta Grammar School FAQs
Register for the Kent Test, list Invicta on your Common Application Form, and meet the required score. Oversubscription rules apply, so meeting the standard does not guarantee a place.
The Kent Test includes English, maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, plus a writing task. Scores are standardised, and pupils must reach required thresholds across subjects to be considered for a place.
Entry is highly competitive. With 240 places, the school is oversubscribed most years, so oversubscription criteria such as siblings, pupil premium, and distance often decide which applicants are offered places.
There is no fixed catchment, but distance from the school is used as a tie-breaker in oversubscription. Applicants living closer to Invicta Grammar School are prioritised once other criteria have been applied.
