The Slough Consortium 11+ Format
The 11+ used by the four grammar schools in the Slough Consortium is a computer-marked multiple-choice assessment provided by GL Assessment. All four grammar schools, including Herschel Grammar School, select pupils based on performance in this GL 11+ test. Registration for the test is completed via the Slough Consortium application portal.
The test consists of two papers, each section is timed, and scores are age-standardised before being combined to produce an overall score.
The assessment is designed to evaluate core skills including logical reasoning, language comprehension and mathematical ability. The format can feel challenging due to the time pressure and question style, so becoming familiar with the structure and question types can help improve confidence and performance.
The Slough Consortium 11+: Overview
The Slough Consortium 11+ is a computer-marked multiple choice assessment provided by GL Assessment. The test assesses your child’s ability in Verbal Reasoning, English Comprehension and Vocabulary, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics.
Overview:
The test consists of two exam papers, each lasting approximately 60 minutes. The structure of the papers is fixed and follows the GL Assessment format.
Slough Consortium 11+ Pass Criteria
Test scores are typically released in mid-October of the year preceding entry. The Slough Consortium uses age standardisation, meaning scores are adjusted to ensure younger children within the cohort are not disadvantaged. There is no fixed published pass mark. Historically, an aggregate standardised score of 111 has been used as the qualifying threshold, but this may vary slightly each year depending on the performance of the cohort.
Paper 1:
- Verbal Reasoning
- English Comprehension and Vocabulary
Paper 2:
- Non-Verbal Reasoning
- Mathematics
Each section is timed, and scores are standardised based on age. The results are then combined to give an overall ranking.
The exam is designed to assess core skills such as logical reasoning, language comprehension, and mathematical ability. There is no published pass mark, but each year the Consortium sets a standardisation threshold which determines eligibility for selection.
For 2025 entry, the Slough Consortium used GL Assessment’s computer-marked multiple-choice format. For 2026 entry, the exam continues in the same GL Assessment multiple-choice format. It is expected that this format and provider will also be used for 2027 entry.

Catchment Area
As outlined above, children must score an aggregate mark of 111 in order to be eligible for consideration to Herschel Grammar School. This is set out in the 2023 admissions policy – please note this is subject to change. The school also uses a catchment area in its oversubscription criteria; this is found on page 6, appendix i in the Admissions Policy hyperlinked aboveÂ
Oversubscription Criteria:
Where the number of eligible pupils reaching the required standard in the 11+ entrance examination exceeds the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:
- Looked After Children* who are being accommodate, or who have been taken into care by a local authority under section 20, 31 or 38 of the Children Act 1989;
- Pupils living in the school catchment area, which is defined as a home address within 4 miles of the school. Distance is measured in a straight line from the front door of the child’s home address (including flats) to the main entrance gate of the school;
- Up to a further 10 places will be offered to eligible applicants with a home address within 10 miles of the school who are eligible for the Pupil Premium at the closing date for submission of the Common Application form;
- Children of permanent members of staff who have been continuously employed at the school for 2 years or longer;
- The remaining places, up to the PAN of 150, will be allocated in rank order of performance in the examination.
Additional eligibilities:
Children with EHC plans are admitted via separate statutory procedures. This is contained in Herschel Grammar Schools 2023 Admissions Policy. Where children with an EHC plan qualify for the school for entry in year 7, they will be admitted before the allocation of other candidates, before any oversubscription criteria is implemented.
For a full and detailed breakdown of Herschel’s admissions criteria, and to understand whether your child is likely to be admitted, please visit the school’s 2023 Admission policy in the relevant hyperlink above.
